Winter Storm Stella Freezes Life in US East Coast


More than 6,000 flights in the USA are canceled Tuesday as the Northeast gets pummeled. State of emergency declared in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Schools are closed throughout the region. Top snow fall recorded so far in Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania (2 feet). A 16-year-old girl killed in car accident in New Hampshire – the 3rd weather-related death in this storm.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency Tuesday for all of New York’s 62 counties, including New York City. He also directed non-essential state employees to stay home. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Steve Coleman says 1,124 flights are canceled at LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday (Jan 14th) and about 200 passengers are stranded at Kennedy airport, where 757 flights are canceled. Newark Liberty International Airport has more than 1,000 flights canceled. Many airlines are allowing passengers to make a one-time change to their flights without a fee in many of its affected markets, including Newark, LaGuardia and JFK. Carnegie Mellon University Receives $35 million Gift from TCS

Pittsburgh, PA August 25, 2015 — Carnegie Mellon University and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading global IT services and consultation organization, today announced a $35 million gift from TCS to the university, marking a new era of partnerships between leaders in industry and academia.

Representing the largest corporate gift to CMU and the largest gift from outside the U.S., this donation will fund a new facility, the Tata Consultancy Services Building, which will support education and cutting-edge research by CMU faculty and students. At approximately 40,000 square-feet, the stand-alone structure will house state-of-the-art facilities, providing collaborative spaces for the CMU community. The building will provide space for TCS staff to interact with CMU faculty, staff and students.

The gift also will endow Presidential Fellowships and Scholarships, increasing access to a CMU education for outstanding students. In this way, TCS, which has been at the forefront of national and grassroots campaigns to encourage science, technology, engineering and math education, will help equip Carnegie Mellon undergraduate and graduate students with the knowledge they need for future careers.
